Scottish Water has announced a £3.2 million project in Edinburgh aimed at preventing sewer-related debris, such as wet wipes, from entering the Water of Leith.

The project focuses on upgrading an existing unscreened storm overflow located under Gorgie Road at Saughton Park. The work will involve installing a new spill chamber and a powered screen to effectively filter out debris when the overflow operates during heavy rain. Storm overflows are necessary components of the sewer network, designed to prevent wastewater from backing up and flooding properties during intense rainfall.

The work is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and will take approximately six months.

Scottish Water Senior Project Manager Ethan Gillies Denning confirmed that the project will require a full road closure on Gorgie Road between Robb's Loan and Hutchison Crossway. He stated that the team is working closely with Edinburgh City Council to minimise disruption for residents and road users.

"Once completed, the new screened storm overflow will significantly reduce the amount of sewer debris getting into the Water of Leith, enhancing the area for everyone," said Mr. Denning.

This investment is part of Scottish Water's Improving Urban Waters programme, an additional £500 million package of investment dedicated to improving the environment and enhancing local water bodies, working closely with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

Scottish Water will hold a drop-in information event at Bainfield Bowling Club on Thursday, 27 November 2025, from 3 pm until 7 pm, for the public to find out more about the construction and potential disruption.
