Network Rail Completes £4.5m Kyle Line Track Upgrade Works

Network Rail has successfully completed a significant investment programme on the Kyle Line in the Highlands, delivering essential upgrades worth £4.5 million.

Over a three-week period, from 19 October to 10 November, engineers worked around the clock to enhance the line's infrastructure, which is considered a crucial lifeline for remote Highland communities.

The comprehensive scope of work, which took place between Achnashellach and Strathcarron, included:

Track Renewal: Replacing approximately 4.5 miles of worn track, including rails, around 2,000 sleepers, and ballast (the stone supporting the track).

Drainage and Inspection: Clearing lineside ditches and drainage to mitigate flooding risks, alongside inspections of key structures like bridges and culverts.

Station Works: Carrying out upgrade work at the level crossing at Achnashellach Station.

Scott McMurchie, scheme project manager, highlighted the route's importance: "The Kyle Line isn't just one of the most scenic rail journeys in Scotland, it's a lifeline for the communities it serves across the Highlands." He added that the work was essential to keep the line safe and reliable for years to come.

Train services, which had operated under a temporary timetable, are now running as normal. Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, welcomed customers back, noting that the upgrades will "help ensure more reliable journeys for years to come" on one of Scotland's most scenic routes.
