Scotland's First Commercial Wind Farm Repowered

ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) has completed the upgrade of Hagshaw Hill Wind Farm—the site that initiated Scotland's wind revolution when it began operating in 1995.

The project has undergone a "repowering" process, which is hailed as the fastest way to boost renewable capacity and meet Scotland's 2030 onshore wind targets.

The original 26 turbines have been replaced by just 14 more powerful models, which now generate over 79MW of clean electricity. This output is five times the original capacity, capable of powering the equivalent of 57,000 homes.

Charlie Jordan, CEO of ScottishPower Renewables, said: "Hagshaw Hill started Scotland's wind revolution – and now it's back online, supercharged and ready to lead the next chapter."

The repowering project supported over 100 jobs for turbine technicians and local contractors during the decommissioning and construction phases.

In a move supporting the circular economy, SPR ensured that every blade from the original turbines is being recycled by Plaswire into new materials for construction, replacing high-carbon products like concrete and timber.

Furthermore, the wind farm's community benefit fund has been scaled up significantly. It will now deliver nearly £400,000 annually to the local communities of Coalburn, Douglas, Lesmahagow, and Rigside & Douglas Water—an increase of 26 times the previous amount. This fund will support projects creating local employment and improving facilities over the next 25 years.
