Major Funding Boost To Accelerate Energy Transition Zone

ETZ Ltd, the not-for-profit company leading North East Scotland's energy transition, is set to receive a £17.3 million funding injection from the UK Government.

Confirmed by Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander during a visit to Aberdeen on Thursday, 30 October 2025, the funding will be used to accelerate the construction and preparation of the flagship Energy Transition Zone site.

The Zone is being actively redeveloped by ETZ Ltd on land immediately adjacent to the recently upgraded Aberdeen South Harbour. The harbour's deepwater berths and associated infrastructure are crucial for supporting the construction and deployment of offshore wind projects. The UK Government's £17.3m investment will primarily go towards site development work, ensuring the area is ready for clean energy businesses and their supply chains to co-locate and begin operations.

This development is expected to transform Aberdeen South Harbour into a leading delivery hub for offshore renewable projects, attracting inward investment, and significantly growing the renewables supply chain in the region.

Maggie McGinlay, Chief Executive of ETZ Ltd, stated the funding would be instrumental in the company's plans: "To ensure North East Scotland remains a thriving hub of energy excellence, we must have government and industry working in partnership to support our world-class supply chain who will lead the delivery of the vast pipeline of energy transition projects, particularly offshore wind, on our doorstep.

"The visit of the Secretary of State to Aberdeen, and the hugely welcome confirmation of funding, exemplifies that collaborative approach and will be instrumental in our ability to take forward an accelerated programme of activity that means the Energy Transition Zone, and region more broadly, positions itself as the most attractive location in Europe for investment in low carbon technologies."

This announcement follows previous UK Government investment, which has already contributed £9.7m to the ETZ. This prior funding included support for construction of the Innovation Campus, a facility designed for developing and manufacturing new green energy technologies, and a new Energy Transition Skills Hub, which features an advanced manufacturing zone and a state-of-the-art welding academy.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander emphasised the wider economic impact of the construction: "The UK Government's £17.3m investment in Aberdeen's Energy Transition Zone will create jobs and bring down bills. This investment will accelerate a renewables hub which will help to deliver a thriving renewables sector in and around Aberdeen."
