Network Rail has confirmed a nine-day line closure is scheduled between Haymarket and Dalmeny in January 2026 to allow for major engineering work as part of the Fife electrification project.

The essential upgrades, set to take place from Friday, 17 January to Saturday, 25 January 2026, are a significant step in the Scottish Government’s wider plans to decarbonise passenger services across Scotland’s Railway. The completed work will enable the introduction of battery-electric trains on these routes, promising greater capacity, reliability, and more sustainable journeys.

Catherine Hall, strategy and investment director at Network Rail Scotland, stated that carrying out this work is a "significant step forward" in plans for a better railway. She added: “Delivering a project of this size and complexity takes time, collaboration, and a huge amount of technical expertise."

The project requires the temporary suspension of services, as the location of the work will necessitate changes to some train services that normally operate through Fife.

To maximise the efficiency of the nine-day closure, Network Rail teams will also undertake a series of important track re-railing across the route. This combined work effort aims to make the most of the disruption, simultaneously completing maintenance that will reduce the need for future closures.
