Drax is continuing its investment in Scotland’s future energy workforce by putting a new cohort of electrical and mechanical technicians through its comprehensive Technical Apprenticeship Programme.

The scheme is designed to provide young people with the essential skills, confidence, and experience required to build long-term careers in the rapidly evolving renewable energy sector.

The latest group of apprentices joined the company's Scottish operations in August this year, starting with an extensive five-day induction. The programme was tailored to help them transition into professional life and understand Drax's pivotal role in powering a net zero future.

The induction included crucial safety and business training, site tours, and sessions with Drax leaders, alongside introductions to managers and mentors. Following the initial phase, the apprentices began their technical training with two partner education providers to develop essential hand skills and engineering knowledge. They will then return to site to continue their learning on the job, supported by a structured development curriculum.

Lisa Marriott, Early Careers Development Manager at Drax, emphasised the importance of the scheme: "Our apprentices are the future of Drax and the UK energy sector. We’re proud to support young people from across Scotland, Yorkshire and beyond, providing them with the technical training, mentoring and real-world experience needed to help shape a cleaner and safer energy system."

Drax is also actively supporting its Year 2 technical apprentices, who have returned to their operational teams to apply their formal education and further enhance their technical and professional skills through hands-on experience. The programme provides a valuable route into the energy industry for local students and young people by combining structured career development with practical experience.
