Essential cable maintenance works have commenced on the M90 Queensferry Crossing, focusing on the bridge's crucial stay-cables to ensure they remain in excellent condition and perform as required into the future. Transport Scotland's operating company, BEAR Scotland, is carrying out the routine project on the complex structure.

David Bishop, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, explained the necessity of the project: "These routine maintenance works are necessary to ensure that the Queensferry Crossing’s cables remain in a good condition and continue to perform as required into the future. The bridge is a complex structure that requires constant inspection and maintenance."

The maintenance programme requires several phases of traffic management to ensure the safety of the workers operating at height and from the central reserve:

• Initial Equipment Delivery: An overnight lane closure was put in place on the northbound carriageway on Thursday, 23 October 2025, from 8pm to 5am, to facilitate the delivery of necessary equipment to the site.

• Daytime Speed Restriction: A reduced speed limit of 50mph will be enforced between 8am and 6pm on Monday to Friday for five weeks, starting on Monday, 27 October 2025, and lasting until Friday, 28 November 2025. All lanes will remain open to traffic during these times.

• Overnight Access: To allow crews safe and full access to the cables, overnight lane and carriageway closures will be implemented on alternate carriageways between 8pm and 5am on Monday to Friday nights for two weeks, running from Monday, 3 November 2025, to Friday, 14 November 2025.

During the full overnight carriageway closures, traffic will be diverted over the nearby Forth Road Bridge. BEAR Scotland confirmed consultation has been carried out with relevant stakeholders in advance of the project.
