Motherwell Pupils Get Hands-On Construction Experience

Clark Contracts have given local school pupils in Motherwell direct, hands-on experience of the construction industry through a specially tailored careers event.

The 'Build Your Future' event, organised in partnership with Developing the Young Workforce and North Lanarkshire Council, took place at Clark Contracts' live refurbishment site at the former Motherwell Town Hall, where the company is converting the Grade C listed building into 20 modern, affordable homes for the Council.

Forty pupils from Taylor High School and Bellshill Academy participated, went through a safety induction from the Clark Contracts project, followed up by live demonstrations of specialist skills including slating, stonework, joinery, and leadwork—a trade vital to the restoration of the historic Town Hall structure.

Michael Scanlan, Director at Clark Contracts, expressed his enthusiasm for supporting local talent: "It is fantastic to have been able to support the development of local school pupils by giving them hands-on construction experience on our site. We are committed to nurturing young talent in the industry and hope that this event will inspire more students to consider a career in construction."

Councillor Michael McPake, Housing Convener, highlighted the value of seeing a live Council housing development used for vocational education. He noted that the 'Build Your Future' project, co-developed by employers and educators, targets secondary school students (S1-S3) to "inform and inspire young people to consider and explore careers in the construction industry."

"The day was a great success, and I hope more contractors offer similar opportunities," Councillor McPake added.
