Clark Contracts and the University of Strathclyde have been jointly shortlisted for two prestigious accolades at the Learning Places Scotland Awards 2025, celebrating their work on the Curran Building.

The project, which houses the university's Andersonian Library, is a finalist for: Innovation in Delivering a Sustainable Learning Space; and Refurbishment of the Year

The building's refurbishment focused heavily on improving its thermal efficiency and reducing its environmental impact. The external fabric repair works are estimated to achieve a potential 48% reduction in heat loss, leading to a substantial decrease in heat demand and carbon emissions.

Key aspects of the sustainability retrofit included:

• Insulation and Roofing: The existing roofing system was replaced with new, high-performance insulation and a tapered roofing system to achieve an average U value of 0.18W/M2K.

• Window Replacement: 380 single-glazed windows were replaced and remodelled with new, high-performance low emissivity triple-glazed units.

• Façade Upgrade: The cladding on Levels 6 and 7 was upgraded, and the thermal insulation was enhanced, with thermal bridging removed where possible.

As main contractor, Clark Contracts, also delivered Phase 1 and 2 of the Curran Building's refurbishment. Phase 1 involved creating a new library and study space on Level 3, which included installing new curtain walling to maximise daylight and enhance the student working environment. Phase 2 comprised similar external repairs, including roof, window, and masonry work.

The firm has maintained a relationship with the university for over 20 years and has been on its Minor Works Framework since 2007, recently delivering a further 12 projects across the campus.

Gerry Cummins, Director at Clark Contracts, said he was "absolutely delighted" by the shortlisting, calling the recognition a testament to the "hard work, innovation, and collaboration" of everyone involved in delivering a project that supports the creation of "future-ready learning environments".

Clark Contracts received a total of 14 nominations across the awards, including for Contractor of the Year and Inspiring Learning Spaces.
