Scottish Water Commits £6.2m To Clean Up River Forth

Scottish Water is starting work on a £6.2 million project to significantly reduce spills and sewage-related debris entering the River Forth in Stirling.

The work, located in the Raploch area of the city, will involve replacing two high-priority storm overflows and upsizing the associated pipework and manhole chambers in Woodside Road and Laurencecroft Road.

Ethan Gillies Denning, Scottish Water Senior Project Manager, said the overflows were chosen to help improve water quality, reduce sewer-related debris, and minimise spills during heavy rain. Once completed, the project is expected to reduce the frequency and volume of these spills into the River Forth.

The work in Raploch is part of Scottish Water's Improving Urban Waters programme, an additional £500m package of investment dedicated to enhancing the environment. Operating under the banner 'Draining the Rain, Enhancing the Environment', the programme focuses on preventing debris such as wet wipes from entering the environment during rainfall.

The publicly owned utility is working in close partnership with the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) to identify and upgrade priority storm overflows for water quality and aesthetic reasons.

The project is being delivered by Scottish Water's alliance partner, Caledonia Water Alliance, and is scheduled to begin on Monday, 20 October 2025, with completion expected by autumn 2026. The work requires diverting a core footpath in Woodside Road and a cycle path in Laurencecroft Road, but no major traffic management is needed.
