Glasgow is accelerating its construction of secure on-street cycle storage, with the recent installation of 27 new units adding 162 bike spaces to the city's network.

This is part of an ambitious five-year programme to deliver up to 3,000 secure cycle storage spaces across the city, primarily targeting residents in tenement flats who typically lack practical storage options.

The rollout is helping the city move towards its target of 720 new spaces by the end of 2025. With 87 new units already built and delivered this year, the city is on track to hit its total goal of 120 new units for the year.

The scheme, delivered by specialist contractor Cyclehoop, has come a long way since its successful 2021 pilot, with over 1,700 secure spaces now constructed and in place across nearly 300 locations. Each shelter unit is designed to hold up to six bikes.

The strong demand for the new infrastructure—with 94 per cent occupancy and close to 3,000 residents signed up—demonstrates that Glaswegians are continuing to embrace cycling. Shelter locations are selected based on demand, building type, proximity to cycle routes, and data from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation.
