East Dunbartonshire Council Leader, Councillor Gordan Low, joined pupils and partners in cutting the first sod to mark the start of construction on the new £31.5 million Balmuildy Primary School and Early Years Centre.

The new two-storey educational facility is being built on the site of the existing school in Bishopbriggs. It will accommodate over 460 pupils and include a dedicated early years centre for 60 children, featuring classrooms with outdoor terracing.

The project is being delivered by a strategic partnership between the Council, hub West Scotland, and main contractor Morgan Sindall Construction. Enabling works for the "tandem build" were carried out during the summer holidays to minimise disruption, a process that allows pupils to see the new school being built from the existing one.

Councillor Low stated that the new school promises to "enhance the learning experiences of local children by providing an inspiring, flexible and fit-for-purpose educational environment."

The new Balmuildy Primary School and Early Years Centre is expected to open to pupils in Spring 2027. Following the demolition of the old school building, work will then begin on a custom-built early years playground, an all-weather multi-use games area, and landscaped grounds.
