An ambitious plan to create a new Northfield Academy and community hub has taken a step forward after being presented to Aberdeen City Council's Education and Children's Services Committee yesterday, Tuesday, 16 September.

The committee heard that options and costings for a new community campus will now go to the authority's budget-setting process for 2026/27. The project is part of the ongoing Schools Estate Plan, which also includes proposals for a new school to serve the Bucksburn/Newhills area.

The new campus is being put forward as a long-term solution to address the presence of Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in the current Northfield Academy building.

Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of the committee, said the proposal was a "major step forward," which would not only reduce excess school capacity but also provide a hub for the entire community. He added that the council is determined to provide the "best, most modern and cost-effective schools and community facilities" possible.

Vice-convener, Councillor Jessica Mennie, stated she was "delighted" that the council was able to deliver better quality learning environments for pupils alongside modern community facilities.

The committee also agreed to undertake a feasibility study to investigate options for a new primary school to serve the Grandhome area.
