A group of 18 organisations, led by Transform Scotland, have signed a statement supporting plans to extend Edinburgh's tram network with a new north-south route.
The organisations, including the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce and Edinburgh Airport, believe the extension will bring significant economic, social, and environmental benefits to the city.
The proposed route would improve transport links in some of Edinburgh's most economically deprived areas, provide a more sustainable transport option, and help reduce car use. The City of Edinburgh Council states that the current tram line has supported over 1,000 local jobs a year and that for every £1 invested, it generates £4 in economic benefit.
According to Colin Howden, Director of Transform Scotland, an expanded network would increase connectivity for a "large section of the city," including some of the lowest-income areas, allowing better access to jobs and shopping.
The proposed north-south line has already been granted permission by the Scottish Parliament. The public consultation on the route proposals is currently underway and will close on 17 November.
