The temporary repair of the Woodside Viaduct on the M8 has been delayed due to unexpected complications, with a revised completion date of late 2027.
Work on the eastbound carriageway is now scheduled to be finished by autumn 2026, with the westbound carriageway following in the second half of 2027.
The project, which is being undertaken by Amey on behalf of Transport Scotland, has encountered several challenges, including the need to strengthen the viaduct's triangular crossheads and associated propping steelwork, which has proven more complex than anticipated. The need to avoid loading the SPT tunnels has also added to the complexity and caused delays. Most significantly, an existing sewer was found to be in a different location than expected, slowing progress on the temporary propping.
Despite these setbacks, the project has made substantial progress, with temporary props installed at 13 of the 23 pier locations. Transport Scotland's Director of Major Projects, Lawrence Shackman, acknowledged the public's patience and thanked them for their understanding. He said the agency is continuing to engage with Amey to complete the work as quickly and safely as possible while keeping the motorway open to the 150,000 vehicles that use it daily. The project's cost range remains between £126m and £152m.
