Work Begins On £13.7m Renfrewshire Housing Development

Work has started on the construction of 65 new council houses in Gallowhill, as part of Renfrewshire Council's large-scale housing regeneration programme.

The £13.7 million development is being built on a vacant site off Montgomery Road.

The development will include a mix of property types, including cottage flats, bungalows, and two-storey houses, with many designed to be wheelchair-accessible. The homes will be built to high energy efficiency standards, featuring air source heat pumps and solar panels. A nearby play park will also be relocated and upgraded for the community.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council's Communities and Housing Policy Board, said she was "really excited" to see the project get underway. She added that the designs were informed by feedback from the local community to ensure they reflect their needs.

The project is supported by £9.6 million of Scottish Government funding. Cabinet Secretary for Housing Màiri McAllan said the new homes will be a "significant boost to the area," helping to provide homes for generations to come. She also highlighted that the Scottish Government has supported the delivery of more than 139,000 affordable homes since 2007, with a budget of £768 million for 2025-26.

Renfrewshire Council appointed McTaggart Construction to carry out the design and build. The firm has expanded its successful employability programme, which has provided 38 work placements and resulted in 14 permanent jobs for young people in the last 12 months.

The new homes add to other high levels of investment in council houses across Renfrewshire, with 315 new council homes delivered in recent years and a decade-long regeneration programme underway to benefit around 1,600 homes in eight areas.
