Network Rail Opens New East Kilbride Train Station

A new train station has opened in East Kilbride, marking a significant milestone in a major transport enhancement project for the town.

The £9 million facility, delivered by Network Rail and contractor AmcoGiffen, replaces the previous station building with a modern facility offering a greatly improved passenger experience.

The new station features a new ticket office and barriers, a waiting area, and improved accessibility. It is part of a wider £144m investment from the Scottish Government to electrify the line and improve rail services between the town and Glasgow.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Fiona Hyslop, said the new station was fitting for a line that is benefiting from modernisation, bringing with it "greener and more sustainable electric trains" on completion of the £144m programme.

Liam Sumpter, managing director of Network Rail Scotland, said the station was "truly fit for the future" and delivered around the needs of the community. "The East Kilbride enhancement project is one of the most significant rail upgrades we've delivered in recent years. We're reaching the final stages now as we work to complete the electrification of the line and welcome electric trains onto the route towards the end of the year," he added.

Several upgrades have already been completed along the route, including a new £16m station at Hairmyres in May, new footbridges at Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock stations, and the renewal of the railway bridge in Busby.

Joanne Maguire, ScotRail Managing Director, added that the opening of the new station was a "huge step forward" in delivering a more modern and sustainable railway for customers and would support the future introduction of electric trains along the route.
