Alexandria Regeneration Project Expanded After Community Feedback

A regeneration project in the heart of Alexandria has been expanded following feedback from the local community.

Residents and members of the business community, consulted through the Alexandria Business Improvement District (BID), agreed that the original plan for improvements on Mitchell Way should be widened to incorporate work on Main Street in order to encourage more people to visit the town.

The decision was made after a consultation exercise earlier this year, which involved online and face-to-face engagement, made it clear that local people believed upgrades to Main Street should be an integral part of the proposals. Many of the comments focused on enhancing the town centre as a whole and improving pavements and lighting to ensure the area is a safe and welcoming place to visit. Responses also highlighted the desire to transform both Mitchell Way and Main Street into a place where people would choose to spend time.

Convener of Infrastructure, Regeneration and Economic Development, Councillor David McBride, said he was "delighted that the scope of this project will be widened after feedback was provided from both members of the business community and residents in the local area."

Vice Convener, Councillor Lawrence O'Neill, added that it was "testament to people involved and invested in the town that they have taken the chance to have their opinions heard and acted upon."

Conversations with the BID will continue to discuss the scope of the project and identify further steps to improve the town centre.
