The East Kilbride enhancement project, a major Scottish Government-funded initiative, has achieved another significant construction milestone with the commissioning of new lifts at Giffnock station.

These lifts, along with those already in use at the newly opened Hairmyres station, are part of a £7 million package of access improvements designed to make platforms more accessible for all passengers. Similar upgrades are also planned for East Kilbride station, which is set to open next month.

The £144m East Kilbride enhancement project is a comprehensive programme focused on decarbonising the line and delivering more reliable rail services. Key construction works completed along the route include the opening of the new £16m station at Hairmyres in May, the installation of new footbridges at Busby, Clarkston, and Giffnock stations, the renewal of the railway bridge in Busby, and the installation of a new road bridge on Thornliebank Road. These civils and structural works are crucial to accommodating the electrification of the line.

The project continues to progress towards its December 2025 completion target, with electric trains expected to be operational on the route by the end of the year. Paul Reilly, senior programme manager at Network Rail Scotland, highlighted the impact of these infrastructure improvements, stating that such upgrades, while seemingly small, can have a "big impact" in enhancing connectivity and creating a more inclusive railway.
