Glasgow's Byres Road, a renowned destination for shopping, bars, and restaurants, is set to undergo further transformation as the second phase of its public realm improvement works is slated to begin in August.

This phase will concentrate on the northern half of the street, extending from University Avenue to Great Western Road, building on the success of the initial phase.

The project is substantially funded through the Glasgow City Region City Deal, with both the Scottish and UK Governments each contributing £2.225 million to the initiative. The improvements planned for this phase include:

• Widening and upgrading pavements: To create a more relaxed and enjoyable experience for pedestrians and reduce the width of crossing points.

• Introduction of step-free crossings: Enhancing accessibility at side streets.

• Installation of protected cycle paths and new greenery: Promoting active travel and improving the street's aesthetic.

• Enhancing key corners: Creating distinct and attractive public spaces with seating areas for rest.

The completion of the cycle paths on Byres Road will establish a continuous route for cyclists between Great Western Road and Partick Cross. This new route will seamlessly integrate with Glasgow's wider City Network of cycle infrastructure at Yorkhill and connect down to the National Cycle Network along the River Clyde.

The first phase of the works, which focused on the southern half of Byres Road and Church Street, has already proven successful. The creation of a more attractive streetscape has contributed to a notable reduction in retail vacancy rates, which are now well below pre-pandemic levels, demonstrating the positive economic impact of such public realm investments.

Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for Transport and Climate at Glasgow City Council, expressed his satisfaction with the project's progress: "The first phase of the public realm improvement works at Byres Road has been a great success, creating a more attractive environment for residents, businesses and visitors. The second phase of these works will extend the transformation of this key street, upgrading pavements and improving the pedestrian experience as well as introducing safer cycle infrastructure and greater greenery to the area."

The entire Byres Road public realm project is expected to be complete in August 2027, promising a significantly revitalised and more user-friendly environment for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
