Kirkwall Grammar School MUGA Upgraded

The multi-use games area (MUGA) at Kirkwall Grammar School has received an upgrade, ready to welcome both summer sunshine and the upcoming Orkney 2025 Island Games.

Located between the school and the 3G pitch, the revitalised space has been improved through a collaborative effort between Orkney Islands Council's Sport and Leisure Service, Kirkwall Grammar School, and the Scottish Football Association.

Improvements include the installation of permanent football goals, custom-built by Orkney Mechanical Services, and new posts for setting up a tennis net. Fresh court markings have been painted to support small-sided games of football, tennis, and basketball, with the potential for basketball hoops to be added in the future.

To boost visual appeal and community spirit, local illustrator Alex Leonard has created sport-themed artwork for the kickboards, making the space colourful and inviting. Court rules have also been introduced and clearly displayed to promote safe and inclusive use of the area.

Elaine Harcus, Sports Development Officer for Orkney Islands Council's Sport and Leisure Service said: "Playing games outdoors, whether you are young or a little bit older, is such an important part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Our aim was to make the site a much more attractive space to encourage recreational play, as well as developing the area for KGS curriculum activity. With the help of the Scottish Football Association, we’ve been able to achieve that, and I can't wait to see the area in use."

Graeme Sutherland, North Regional Manager for the Scottish Football Association, added: "We are delighted to see the improvements made in this space and this is a great addition to the site at Kirkwall Grammar School. It is important that children and young people have access to good quality facilities and spaces where they can play informally and creatively. The MUGA at Kirkwall Grammar School will certainly provide an opportunity to replicate the street games we all enjoyed when we were young!"
