The Eastern Green Link 2 (EGL2) project has confirmed a temporary adjustment to working hours at its converter station site near Boddam, Peterhead.
This strategic decision is designed to facilitate crucial construction activities and ensure the timely delivery of this nationally significant energy infrastructure, a vital link in the UK’s net-zero transition.
From Saturday, 19 July, the project site will transition to a 7-day working week. Weekend hours, agreed by exception with Aberdeenshire Council, will run from 07:00 to 17:00 on Saturdays and 08:00 to 17:00 on Sundays, augmenting the existing weekday schedule of 07:00 to 19:00.
This extended schedule is essential to support key time-critical construction tasks. These include continuous concrete pours for vital foundation and slipform works, essential piling operations, and upcoming horizontal directional drilling (HDD). Such activities demand uninterrupted workflows to guarantee structural integrity, maintain safety standards, and ensure overall project efficiency.
While the extended schedule is anticipated to continue until March 2026, not all activities will span this entire period. Noise levels are expected to remain within acceptable limits, with the majority of impacts stemming from vehicle movements and material deliveries. The project also noted that a short period of 24-hour working will be necessary later in the year for specific slipform operations, with advance notice to be provided to the local community.
Gillian Doig, Community Liaison Manager for SSEN Transmission, reiterated the project's commitment to local residents. "Extending our working hours is a necessary step to keep EGL2 on track," she said. "We remain committed to minimising disruption to the local community and will continue to work closely with Aberdeenshire Council and residents to manage noise and safety throughout the extended schedule."
