£200,000 Boost For Transformative Montrose Community Hub Development

Construction News Image
A pivotal £200,000 donation from Montrose Port Authority (MPA) has propelled the Montrose Community Trust (MCT) closer to its ambitious £2 million fundraising target for the transformational 'Gable End' development, marking a significant stride for the Angus town's future.

This generous contribution represents the entirety of MPA's Community Benefit Fund for both 2025 and 2026, delivered as a one-off lump sum to accelerate the project's realisation.

MPA's investment goes beyond mere financial support; it underscores the port's enduring commitment to shaping Montrose's future through strategic infrastructure development and community-focused initiatives. This legacy includes the ongoing redevelopment of the former Petrofac site into the Montrose Port Industrial Park and the regeneration of the historic Customs House. The port has a history of backing local projects, having previously supported and continuing to sponsor the Montrose Playhouse, the town's community cinema and arts centre.

Due for completion in Autumn 2026, MCT's 'Gable End' is envisioned as a purpose-built, 1300 sqm facility that will completely revitalise the Links Park Stadium entrance. Designed to maximise the space behind the stand, it will provide state-of-the-art infrastructure essential for the Trust to significantly expand its impactful education, sports, and health programmes across Montrose and beyond.

The new building will host a diverse array of spaces, including a modern community centre and a digital lab poised to foster innovation and employability. For football enthusiasts, the development will feature an accessible section and a dedicated enclosed sensory booth. Crucially, it will also house a dedicated dementia centre, allowing for the growth of Montrose Connections, the Trust's vital support group for individuals with moderate to mild dementia and their carers. The new facility will also provide a much-needed fit-for-purpose office space for the Trust's staff, who currently manage their extensive operations from a confined, cupboard-like area within the main Links Park stand. This new base aims to foster greater collaboration and innovation under one roof.

Despite their current space challenges, Montrose Community Trust currently delivers 32 impactful programmes, engaging with an impressive 12,000 local people annually. Their initiatives include 'Breakfast in the Box', a free community breakfast supporting those affected by the cost of living crisis or social isolation, the 'International Speaking Club' for non-native English speakers, and 'Festive Friends', which tackles loneliness during the Christmas season, alongside various football programmes for all ages and abilities. The Trust's positive impact on well-being is further evidenced by NHS Tayside referring patients to several of MCT's health programmes, such as the 'Walk & Talk' group and 'The Changing Room', a 12-week course for men addressing mental health issues.

With this transformational development, MCT anticipates boosting community engagement by up to 50% beyond its current reach of 12,000 individuals. The project is also expected to stimulate local economic growth and strengthen ties with like-minded charities, paving the way for innovative future initiatives.

MPA's substantial support means the Trust has now reached 30% of its £2 million funding goal within just ten months of greenlighting the project. MCT is now concentrating on securing the remaining funds and hopes that the port's landmark donation will inspire further support from individuals and organisations keen to champion the project's profound and lasting community impact.

Chris Platt, CEO of Montrose Community Trust, commented: "We're immensely proud of the impact we already make in the local community and we are ambitious and passionate about achieving so much more. The Gable End will be the space to seize our ambitions, and we're incredibly grateful to Montrose Port for their generous donation; it will go a long way towards the project's realisation."

Montrose Port Authority CEO Tom Hutchison added: "As a trust port, everything we do is about reinvesting in Montrose, both through the growth of the port and by supporting projects that deliver real, long-term benefits for our community. The Gable End facility is exactly that. It's a project that will create lasting change, improving lives not just in the coming years, but for generations to come. We're proud to play our part in helping to make it a reality and to back the incredible work of the Montrose Community Trust team."
