Stirling Proposes New Active Travel Infrastructure

Construction News Image
Stirling Council has launched a public consultation on proposals for four new active travel routes situated to the south of Stirling city centre. These planned high-quality travel corridors, earmarked for Burghmuir Road, the A9 in Bannockburn, St Ninians Road, and Glasgow Road, are set to converge at St Ninians Roundabout and will form a crucial component of the region’s future transport network.

The proposed routes are designed to connect communities to each other and to the city centre, while also linking seamlessly with existing key travel infrastructure, including the established 'Walk, Cycle, Live Stirling' network. This development is intended to significantly support the growing shift towards active travel across the region, contributing directly to Scotland’s 2045 net-zero target and other important emissions reduction goals. A bid for initial design funding has already been submitted to Transport Scotland, highlighting the council's commitment to advancing these plans swiftly.

Councillor Jen Preston, Convener of Stirling Council’s Environment, Transport and Net Zero Committee, emphasised the broad benefits of the project. “These new active travel routes would make it safer and easier for residents in this part of Stirling to walk, cycle or wheel to their destination, whether that’s school, work, higher education or leisure,” she said. “By connecting to existing and proposed active travel infrastructure, there would be seamless travel corridors across Stirling for walking and cycling, from north to south, which is a really exciting development in our ambition to create a fair and clean transport system for everyone.”

Cllr Preston also highlighted the wider environmental, health, and social advantages, along with strong economic reasons, such as improved access to education, jobs, and services.

To ensure the proposed routes effectively meet community needs, the council is urging residents to participate in the survey. Feedback can be submitted online via the Engage Stirling website or through paper copies available at Stirling Council libraries. The South Stirling project aligns with key regional plans, including the Climate and Nature Emergency Plan, the Sustainable Mobility Strategy, and the new Local Development Plan currently in progress.

The public survey will close at midnight on Monday, 11 August 2025.
