Devro Embarks On £2.9m Sustainable Upgrade At Scottish Facility

Construction News Image
Devro, a prominent global manufacturer of collagen casings, has commenced a substantial £2.9 million capital investment project at its Scottish facility in Moodiesburn.

The initiative is designed to drastically reduce the site's carbon emissions and boost overall productivity, aligning with the company's ambition to achieve net zero by 2045.

The core of this significant upgrade involves the installation of multi-stage 600kWhth heat pump technology, alongside circulation pumps, heat exchangers, and a thermal store. This advanced system will enable Devro to recover and reuse heat generated during its manufacturing processes, substantially reducing reliance on existing gas-fired boilers. This is projected to cut CO2 emissions by 2,000 tonnes annually, while simultaneously driving manufacturing efficiency to support growth in production capacity and export targets.

Scottish Enterprise is supporting this strategic investment with a £1 million grant, recognising its potential to future-proof operations through the adoption of advanced sustainable technologies. The project is set to position the Moodiesburn site as one of the most energy-efficient and productive facilities within the entire Devro group, which is part of Germany's SARIA Food & Pharma Division of SARIA Group.

Stephen Campbell, Operations Director UK & NI at Devro, commented: "This is another important step to creating an even more sustainable site in Moodiesburn."

Elaine Morrison, Director, Boosting Capital Investment, at Scottish Enterprise, added: "This strategic capital investment by Devro shows how businesses can adopt advanced technologies to future proof their operations. Not only will it make the site more sustainable, but it will also improve production capability, boosting the significant contribution Devro already makes to Scotland's export targets."

Highlighting the innovative nature of the project, Muir Sneddon, Sustainability Director at SARIA Food & Pharma, stated: "This groundbreaking project will see the first 105-degree Celsius high-temperature heat pump introduced to Scotland. I'm proud that Devro is leading the field with this technical innovation."
