RWE, a prominent power generator in the UK, has officially initiated construction on the 62.7-megawatt (MW) Golticlay Onshore Wind Farm.
Located five kilometres northwest of Lybster in Caithness, Scotland, the project sees RWE collaborating with Farrans, who are managing the construction operations.
The Golticlay Wind Farm is designed to incorporate 11 advanced wind turbines, each standing 180 metres to the blade tip and boasting an individual capacity of 5.7 MW. Once fully operational, anticipated by the end of 2026, this wind farm is projected to generate sufficient renewable electricity to supply approximately 84,000 Scottish homes annually, significantly contributing to Scotland's net-zero targets.
Victoria Allen, RWE Head of Onshore Development, Scotland, commented: "This is an exciting moment as work begins on the Golticlay Onshore Wind Farm, a project that underscores our commitment to Scotland's renewable energy sector. Golticlay will not only generate clean, home-grown power but also deliver economic benefits at a regional level, boosting local businesses and creating jobs in the area."
Golticlay is one of several RWE projects currently under construction in Scotland, joining Enoch Hill (70 MW), Camster II (36 MW), and Strathy Wood (70 MW). Upon full operation, these four developments will collectively contribute 231 MW of installed capacity to the Scottish grid.
Farrans has been appointed as a main contractor, responsible for overseeing construction. The firm has committed to engaging local subcontractors, including Alan Gow Groundworks, which expects to employ 25 people on-site during its contracted works, maximising the project's local economic impact.
Patrick Murray, Regional Director at Farrans, stated: "We are proud to be a part of the Golticlay project, which will bring transformative benefits to both the local economy and Scotland's renewable energy goals. By partnering with regional businesses and engaging the local workforce, we aim to maximize the positive impact of this project across Caithness."
RWE has also collaborated with the Nordex Group, who will manufacture and supply the 11 Delta4000 series N149/5.7 turbines via the nearby port of Wick, further solidifying the local supply chain's involvement.
