SPEN Completes £8.4m Kilmarnock Substation Upgrade

Construction News Image
SP Energy Networks has successfully completed an £8.4 million upgrade of its Kilmarnock Town substation, a crucial investment aimed at boosting capacity and resilience within the region's electricity network.

This modernisation is a vital step in preparing for the projected doubling of the UK's electricity demand by 2050, as homes and businesses increasingly rely on electricity for heating and transport.

The significant investment, part of wider efforts to enhance the UK's transmission network, will facilitate the connection of more locally generated renewable power to the grid, enabling its distribution across the country. This will provide more green electricity to support daily lives, unlock economic growth, and increase energy security, all while advancing the UK towards an all-electric future.

Work on the substation commenced in March 2023, focusing on replacing two ageing transformers and upgrading other critical substation equipment, including switching gear and circuit breakers, which had reached the end of their operational life.

As a result of this modernisation, the East Ayrshire substation now boasts increased capacity to meet future energy demands, allowing more communities to benefit from secure and reliable power supplies. This investment in green energy transmission directly aligns with the UK’s ambition to achieve a clean power system by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050.

Jason Mcinally, Project Manager at SP Energy Networks, stated: "With the completion of our Kilmarnock Town substation upgrade project, we’re improving the reliability of the power supply for homes and businesses in Kilmarnock and surrounding areas. Kilmarnock is now better equipped than ever to meet the demands of a low-carbon future. For decades to come the region will play a key role in renewable energy generation, helping more people across the UK to access clean, green, secure energy. I’d like to thank our hard-working team and contractors who helped make this transformation happen and all with minimal disruption to the local community throughout."
