Nearly £1m In Govt Funding Boosts Glasgow Community Regeneration

Construction News Image
Glasgow City Council has successfully secured almost £1 million in Regeneration Capital Grant Fund (RCGF) support from the Scottish Government, totalling £998,169, for two significant community regeneration projects within the city.

These initiatives, located in Possilpark and at The Glue Factory near the south side of the canal, aim to deliver tangible social, economic, and environmental improvements to their respective communities.

The larger portion of the funding, £600,000, will be allocated to the Social Entrepreneurs Centre in Possilpark. This centre, to be delivered by ng homes, will provide a dedicated space for social entrepreneurs, complete with a fully-equipped multimedia room and support for 24 local social entrepreneurs. Its core objective is to create a hub for collaboration, innovation, and economic growth, particularly benefiting individuals from disadvantaged communities. The centre's development is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 and will complement the existing Saracen House and recent public realm improvements in the area.

The remaining £398,169 in RCGF support will go towards the 'micro-powerstation' refit project at The Glue Factory. This initiative, led by Agile City, a community interest company focused on sustainable urban regeneration, will transform the former industrial building. The refit involves enhancing insulation and energy-efficiency to significantly reduce power consumption, alongside the installation of photovoltaic panels to enable the building to produce more power than it consumes. This project aligns with a broader movement to repurpose post-industrial buildings into small-scale 'power stations', contributing to Glasgow's overall sustainability goals. The Glue Factory currently offers studio workspace, including green screen and edit suites, and the retrofit will further improve its functionality and environmental footprint.

Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Housing and Development at Glasgow City Council, welcomed the funding, stating: "In their different ways, these projects will bring social, economic and environmental benefits to their local communities in Glasgow. It's great to see projects with a real Community Wealth Building focus being funded in the city, supporting start-ups and local social enterprises to thrive."

The Scottish Government's RCGF operates through a competitive bid process, providing financial support for projects that deliver large-scale improvements to deprived areas, with a focus on community involvement, sustainable regeneration, and contributing to net-zero targets.
