Morrison Construction Shortlisted For Scottish Design Award

Morrison Construction's Building Central team has been recognised for its work on the retrofit of The Resident Edinburgh, securing a shortlist nomination at this year's Scottish Design Awards.

The Resident Edinburgh, previously known as Meldrum House, has undergone a comprehensive transformation from an outdated 1950s office building into a contemporary hotel. The project aimed to preserve Edinburgh's architectural heritage while adapting the structure for new use.

The refurbishment involved retaining the building's existing structural frame and reimagining its internal layout to suit the requirements of a modern hotel. Designed by MLA Architects, The Resident Edinburgh now features a reception area, lounge, and bar on the ground floor, with guest rooms occupying the upper levels, blending contemporary amenities within a historic shell.

Notably, the retrofit has achieved a 40% reduction in embodied carbon emissions compared to what a traditional demolition and rebuild would have incurred, marking it as a significant accomplishment in both design and environmental impact.

David Ewing, Managing Director for Morrison Construction Building Central business, commented on the award shortlist: "The Resident Edinburgh is a fantastic example of how thoughtful design, collaboration and sustainable construction can breathe new life into a building. The transformation delivered a visually striking and environmentally responsible building that blends seamlessly with the surrounding Victorian architecture. Good luck to the team at the Scottish Design Awards in June."

The Scottish Design Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on 25 June at the Double Tree Hotel Hilton, Glasgow.
