Eleven projects focused on accelerating Scotland's hydrogen economy are set to receive a share of £3.4 million in funding from the Scottish Government.

The investment is targeted at developing green hydrogen production facilities, enhancing the hydrogen supply chain, and improving hydrogen transport and storage infrastructure across the country.

The announcement coincides with a parliamentary debate on Scotland’s hydrogen future. Opening the debate, Acting Net Zero Cabinet Secretary Gillian Martin highlighted the significance of hydrogen: "Hydrogen stands as a critical pillar of Scotland’s route to net zero by 2045, but also, alongside the development of our offshore wind capacity, as one of Scotland’s greatest industrial opportunities since the discovery of oil and gas in the North Sea."


Ms Martin also stressed the importance of a fair transition: "A just transition remains at the heart of our approach, and we are determined that no community, particularly those which have powered our economy for generations, will be left behind as we move away from burning fossil fuels towards a low carbon energy system. We are working to build a hydrogen economy in which the benefits of our energy transition are shared, and which harnesses the full potential of our skilled people, our worldclass industries, and our natural resources."

The funding process began in September 2024 when the Scottish Government invited projects to apply for a match-funding grant award of up to 50%, capped at a maximum value of £2 million per project. Following a shortlisting process, 18 projects were invited to submit full applications to the delivery partner, Scottish Enterprise. Ultimately, 11 projects were selected to receive funding.

This investment underscores the Scottish Government's commitment to establishing a robust hydrogen sector as a key component of its future energy system and economic strategy.
