Fife Apprentice Reaches UK Final Of Top Decorating Competition

Casey Gardner, a 19-year-old apprentice painter and decorator from Fife, is set to represent Scotland in the national final of the prestigious 2025 PDA Premier Trophy Awards – Apprentice of the Year Competition.

Ms Gardner secured her place after a successful performance in the Regional Heat held at Glasgow City College.

Demonstrating precision, flair, and strong technical skills, Ms Gardner impressed the judges, earning her a coveted spot at the grand finale which will take place in Doncaster this May.

Organised by the Painters and Decorators Association (PDA), the Premier Trophy Awards is a leading annual competition within the industry, celebrating the highest standards of skill and craftsmanship across the UK. The awards aim to showcase exceptional workmanship, highlight efficient service delivery, and promote excellence within the painting and decorating sector.

Ms Gardner is currently undertaking her apprenticeship with Persimmon Homes while studying at Fife College's Granton Campus in Glenrothes. She was the first apprentice to be recruited through a new partnership established between the college and Persimmon and has since excelled, gaining recognition both within the company and beyond.

Commenting on her achievement, Ms Gardner said: “I'm absolutely thrilled to have made it to the national final. Competing in the regional heat at Glasgow City College was an incredible experience, and I'm so proud of the hard work that got me here. This apprenticeship has given me the chance to grow both professionally and personally, and I'm grateful to Persimmon and Fife College for the support they've provided.”

Ms Gardner's journey in the trade began with the completion of an NPA Painting and Decorating course at Fife College, where her talent was quickly evident. Since joining Persimmon, she has contributed to developments across the region, applying her skills and creativity to transform new homes.

Earlier this year, Ms Gardner played a significant role in the launch of the Fife College–Persimmon partnership, joining Cabinet Secretary for Education Jenny Gilruth MSP at a special event where she demonstrated her painting skills to the Minister. Her talent has also gained international recognition, with a nomination to represent the UK at the WorldSkills Competition in China.

The PDA Premier Trophy Awards are recognised as a benchmark for excellence in the decorating industry, highlighting the skills of the next generation of tradespeople. Ms Gardner's success underscores the valuable contribution of apprenticeships in providing practical skills, fostering careers, and shaping a promising future for individuals within the construction sector.
