Construction is scheduled to commence this month, on Monday, 28 April, on a new £4.1 million housing and office development in Stranraer by social landlord Wheatley Homes.
The project at Ashwood Drive will see the creation of nine two-bedroom homes available for social rent. The housing block will incorporate low-carbon technologies, including solar panels, energy-efficient heating systems, and enhanced insulation.
The Scottish Government has contributed £1.5 million towards the development, with Dumfries and Galloway Council providing an additional £500,000. McTaggart Construction has been appointed as the contractor for the 12-month build.
Tenants are expected to begin moving into the new homes in the spring of 2026. The Ashwood Drive site will also feature a new staff hub for Wheatley Homes.
Alex Lamb, Managing Director at Wheatley Homes South, expressed his enthusiasm for the project: "Everyone at Wheatley is looking forward to work beginning at this site at Ashwood Drive. We are grateful to our partners at Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Scottish Government for their support in being able to deliver these much-needed homes in the town centre in Stranraer. We look forward to the flats being completed and customers being able to move into them in spring 2026."
In 2023, Dumfries and Galloway Council, Wheatley Homes South, and Wheatley Group entered into a strategic agreement aimed at increasing the supply of affordable homes and improving services for local communities.
Over the next three years, Wheatley Homes is set to invest £39.1 million in its existing properties and communities across Dumfries and Galloway, with £9.4 million specifically allocated to Wigtownshire.
Wheatley Homes is part of Wheatley Group, Scotland's largest housing, care, and property-management organisation. In 2024, the group was recognised as the UK's biggest builder of social housing over the preceding decade.
