SNIPEF And BPEC Join Forces To Elevate Scottish Plumbing Apprentices

SNIPEF (Scottish and Northern Ireland Plumbing Employers’ Federation) has announced a partnership agreement with the British Plumbing Employers Council (BPEC) that will see the Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (SPAY) copper category rebranded as Scotland’s qualifying heat for the UK-wide SkillPLUMB competition.

This collaboration unites two well-established competitions, further enhancing SPAY’s 50-year reputation as Scotland’s premier plumbing and heating apprenticeship event. The partnership will also provide apprentices competing in the SkillPLUMB category with a clear pathway to national and international recognition through the WorldSkills UK framework.

Fiona Hodgson, Chief Executive of SNIPEF, commented on the significance of the agreement: "This new partnership will undoubtably help further elevate the SPAY competition to new heights, providing Scotland’s apprentices with the opportunity to compete on a bigger stage and develop the advanced skills our industry demands."

She added: "The integration with SkillPLUMB and WorldSkills UK is more than just a rebrand, it cements apprenticeships as the foundation of a highly skilled workforce, ensuring the plumbing and heating profession continues to thrive in an ever-evolving industry."

Neil Collishaw, Chief Executive Officer of BPEC, also welcomed the partnership: "Our partnership with SNIPEF provides an excellent opportunity to support the next generation of skilled plumbing and heating professionals in Scotland. By combining our resources and expertise, we can enhance the competition and promote the rewarding career paths available in the sector. Together, we aim to address the skills shortage and build a workforce that can meet the challenges of the future."

The Scottish Plumbing Apprentice of the Year (SPAY) competition, celebrating its 50th anniversary in June 2025, has long been a highlight in Scotland’s apprenticeship calendar. Over the past five decades, it has served as a springboard for over 1,200 apprentices, many of whom have gone on to achieve successful careers in the plumbing and heating sector.

This year’s competition is set to take place at South Lanarkshire College in East Kilbride, where apprentices will compete across three specialist categories: copper, leadwork, and renewable technologies. Participants from colleges and training centres throughout Scotland will demonstrate their technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and precision under competitive conditions, ensuring they are well-prepared for the demands of the profession.

Fiona Hodgson reiterated the importance of SPAY: "For half a century, SPAY has showcased the outstanding skills, dedication and potential of Scotland’s plumbing and heating apprentices. Competitions like this are more than just a test of ability, they set a benchmark for excellence, reinforce the importance of high-quality training and inspire the next generation to strive for success."

The 50th SPAY competition arrives at a crucial time for the industry, as apprenticeship opportunities in plumbing and heating continue to decline sharply. Rising business costs, coupled with the forthcoming increase in employer National Insurance contributions, are making it challenging for many companies to invest in training new talent.

SNIPEF is urging the Scottish Government to introduce greater incentives and financial support for employers to ensure they can continue to take on apprentices and equip the next generation with the necessary skills to sustain the industry. The organisation warns that without urgent government intervention, more businesses will be forced to reduce their apprenticeship programmes, exacerbating the workforce crisis and limiting career opportunities for young people in a sector vital to Scotland’s economy.

Fiona Hodgson emphasised the critical need for government support: "Our profession relies on a strong pipeline of apprentices to meet future demand. Employers are facing rising costs, making it harder for them to take on apprentices, despite the proven value of investing in new talent."

She concluded by highlighting the importance of providing opportunities for young people: "Many of today’s industry leaders began their careers as apprentices, thanks to someone willing to take a chance on them. We need more employers to do the same, and government support will be essential in ensuring businesses can continue to offer these life-changing opportunities."
