George V Bridge Active Travel Upgrades To Begin Next Week

Construction News Image
Construction work to enhance the George V Bridge for active travel is set to commence on Monday, 24 March 2025. The project aims to create a safer and more appealing environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users.

The road layout will be redesigned, reducing the number of traffic lanes from five to three. The newly freed space will be used to install segregated cycle lanes across the bridge deck. Junctions at Broomielaw and Clyde Place will also be modified to provide increased protection for cyclists.

Further improvements include the installation of new traffic signals, upgrades to footways, and enhancements to pedestrian crossings. The area will also benefit from new soft landscaping and street trees.

This upgrade is a key component of the city's emerging City Network, which aims to add 270km of safe, segregated cycle routes to existing infrastructure. North of the bridge, the new cycle lanes will connect to the forthcoming Broomielaw/Clyde Street Avenue, providing east-west active travel links. South of the bridge, connections will be made to the South City Way.

The construction phase, expected to last approximately 14 weeks, will begin with work on the southern section of the bridge at Clyde Place, progressing north towards Broomielaw.

Advance signage will be placed at key locations to redirect pedestrians and road traffic. While efforts will be made to minimise disruption, road users should anticipate increased traffic on alternative routes, which may affect journey times.

For more information, residents can visit glasgow.gov.uk/georgevbridge, where detailed project information, including design drawings and phasing details, is available. This information is also accessible at Woodside Library.

The project is funded by Transport Scotland's Active Travel Infrastructure Fund - Tier 1.
