Critical junction renewal works in Port Glasgow have been extended, resulting in a further day of closure for the Inverclyde rail lines.

Network Rail engineers, engaged in a major upgrade project, have encountered delays following an incident at the construction site over the weekend. The project, focused on renewing a key junction, will now conclude on Wednesday, 19th March, with train services expected to resume on Thursday, 20th March.


The ongoing engineering works, which necessitate a 24-hour extension, involve significant infrastructure upgrades to ensure the long-term reliability of the rail network. The incident, which has not been specified, required additional time to rectify, impacting the planned schedule.

The project involves the removal and replacement of complex track infrastructure, including points and crossings, to improve operational efficiency and reduce future maintenance needs. The site team are working around the clock to complete the remaining tasks.
