A ceremony has been held to celebrate the topping out of the new medical and dental centre at Leuchars Station in Fife, marking a significant milestone in the £22 million project.
The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is overseeing the build on behalf of the British Army, with Graham Building North contracted for the construction, which began in October.
The new facility will replace the outdated medical and dental centre, originally built in 1936, and is set to serve around 3,700 personnel at the British Army base and their dependents. The new building will feature physical rehabilitation and mental health facilities, alongside GP and dental services. With Leuchars Station set to become the Army's hub in Scotland, the design of the new centre has been tailored to accommodate future increases in personnel.
Sustainability has been a key focus in the design of the building, with features including thermal efficiency, solar panels, air source heat pumps, and four electric vehicle charging stations. The choice of materials has been made with an emphasis on reducing environmental impact, setting a potential standard for sustainability in future Ministry of Defence medical and dental centres.
Chris MacLeod, Graham Building North’s Regional Director, said: "Our team have been working diligently to deliver this medical and dental facility for our longstanding client, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation. With the frame completed, we can now visualise this sustainable, state of the art building and the services it will provide for the military personnel and their families at Leuchars and in the wider region."
With the structure built to its full height, attention now turns to interior works. Once the replacement facility is complete, medical personnel and patients will transition over to the new medical and dental centre and Graham will demolish the old building.
