Construction has officially commenced on a new standalone nursery at Ferryhill School in Aberdeen.
The £17.1 million project, part of Aberdeen City Council's wider suitability improvement initiative, marks the first phase of a two-phase development that will significantly enhance the learning environment for nursery and primary school-aged children in the Ferryhill area.
"It's great to get the shovel in the ground so that this major upgrade project at Ferryhill School can begin," said Councillor Martin Greig, Convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee. "I am delighted that the school will benefit from a new nursery building as well as significant refurbishment and extension work."
The new nursery building, designed by Mackie Ramsay Taylor Architects and being constructed by Morrison Construction North, will feature a large, open-plan playroom, covered external spaces, and incorporate sustainable features such as air-source heat pumps and rooftop photovoltaic panels.
"This project marks a significant milestone in Mackie Ramsay Taylor’s broader vision to create an innovative, sustainable, and community-focused educational setting," said Bruce Ballance, Director, Mackie Ramsay Taylor Architects.
The nursery is expected to be completed this summer, with pupils set to move into their new facility in August 2025.
Phase two of the project will see the refurbishment and extension of Ferryhill School itself, with work commencing later this year. During this phase, pupils and staff will temporarily relocate to the vacant Walker Road School building.
