SELECT, the trade association for Scotland's electrical contracting industry, has renewed calls for the urgent regulation of the electrical industry, warning that the failure to act on this issue could be considered "another black mark in history."

In a statement marking the association's 125th anniversary, SELECT highlighted a long history of lobbying for regulation, dating back to 1917, with successive governments consistently failing to address the issue.


"Our ancestors clearly had the wisdom to know that electrical miscreants were a danger to the industry and the wider public," said Alan Wilson, Managing Director of SELECT. "It's just a shame that generations of politicians haven't shared that sentiment or had the foresight to tackle a problem that's only grown worse with the rise of renewable technology and untrained 'six-week wonders' cashing in on the unwary public."

SELECT, backed by MSPs, MPs, and industry bodies, has been campaigning for legislation that would make it a statutory offence for unqualified individuals to call themselves electricians.

"The urgent need to protect the public from the activities of unscrupulous traders is becoming ever clearer," said Mike Stark, President of SELECT.

The campaign has gained significant support, with a dedicated Wall of Support attracting numerous signatures.
