Scottish Canals will be undertaking essential maintenance work on the Fort Augustus lock flight this winter. The £1.65 million investment is part of the organisation's Asset Management Strategy.

The primary focus of the work will be to upgrade the lock gate cills, which are the raised sections on the lock chamber floor. New, improved steel cills will be installed on locks one to five.

These upgrades will enhance the efficiency of the lock gates, extend their lifespan, and improve water management. The aim is to ultimately provide a better experience for visitors and boaters.

Work is expected to commence in early January 2025 and continue until the spring. Mackenzie Construction has been appointed as the principal contractor.

While there will be some unavoidable disruption, Scottish Canals and Mackenzie Construction will work to minimise the impact on the local community. The works will be carried out during the canal's winter closure period and coordinated with other local infrastructure projects.
