Works to improve cycling and walking routes in Campbeltown have commenced, Argyll and Bute Council has announced.

The Council's Active Travel Project received £268,296 from the Scottish Government's Cycling Walking and Safer Routes Fund to resurface the cutting, install new street lighting and create a new path from The Cutting and across Quarry Green to the Ferry Terminal.

Councillor John Armour, the council's Policy Lead for Roads and Infrastructure Services, said: "The Cutting is a well-used path in the town but it has deteriorated over the years and was poorly lit, so these improvements will greatly benefit the local community, especially coming into the darker months.

"The installation of a new, improved path across the Quarry Green is a great addition too and I hope these works will encourage more people to leave the car at home and walk and cycle more."

The Council is also in discussions with South Kintyre Development Trust and emergency service helicopter operators about updating the design for the outstanding section of the cycle path along Limecraigs Road so it can connect Ralston Road to The Cutting while taking account of recent changes in safety guidance around hospital helicopter landing sites.
