Sauchiehall Street Regeneration Takes A Step Forward

Construction News Image
Plans to revitalise Sauchiehall Street have taken a significant step forward with the completion of the acquisition of the former Marks & Spencer store by Fusion Group. The £150 million deal paves the way for the transformation of the iconic building into a modern student accommodation development.

The acquisition is a welcome boost for Sauchiehall Street, which has faced challenges in recent years due to the decline of traditional retail and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, ongoing efforts to improve the public realm, such as the major works currently underway, are expected to revitalise the area and attract new businesses and residents.

Fusion Group's investment in the former M&S store demonstrates confidence in the future of Sauchiehall Street and its potential as a vibrant hub for students and young professionals. The development of student accommodation will contribute to the local economy and further enhance the area's appeal.

Chief executive, Stuart Patrick, commented: "This is highly encouraging news for Sauchiehall Street, and the business community warmly welcomes it. The mixed-use development will not only offer accommodation and commercial opportunities but also restore the pedestrian link between Sauchiehall Street and Renfrew Street.

"Revitalising Sauchiehall Street is essential for driving growth in the city centre’s economy and transforming an unused building into valuable assets reflects precisely the kind of investment we want to see more of in Glasgow.

"I congratulate the new owners and eagerly anticipate the progress of their plans."
