SSEN Transmission, the electricity transmission network operator in the north of Scotland, has been awarded nearly £870,000 to progress two innovative projects aimed at improving grid efficiency and capacity.

The projects, SYSMET and REVISE, have been selected for the Alpha phase of Ofgem's Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) program. The funding will allow SSEN Transmission to explore new tools for monitoring system strength and enhancing understanding of static line ratings.

The SIF program, managed in partnership with UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), supports innovation in the gas and electricity networks to facilitate a low-carbon future. These projects are funded by network users and consumers.


SSEN Transmission's projects have already successfully completed the initial Discovery phase, demonstrating their potential to overcome technical challenges. The Alpha phase will focus on establishing proof-of-concept through collaboration with other networks and innovative partners.

The funding represents a significant step forward in SSEN Transmission's efforts to drive innovation and improve the efficiency of the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland.
