An update on the Glasgow Affordable Housing Supply Programme (AHSP) was presented to a council committee today, highlighting its significance in addressing the city's housing emergency.
The AHSP aligns with Glasgow's Housing Strategy and Strategic Housing Investment Plan. The council will allocate £78.687 million, along with £11.544m from the national acquisitions fund, to housing associations and private developers to build an estimated 83 new affordable homes in 2024/25.
Despite budget reductions and rising construction costs, the AHSP delivered impressive results in 2023/24, with 1,353 new affordable homes completed, 661 under construction, and 821 approved. Additionally, £5.236m was allocated for medical adaptations.
The 2024/25 AHSP budget aims to deliver 878 completed homes, with 761 under construction and 489 approvals expected. Medical adaptation funding is set at £3.687m.
The AHSP is increasing the affordable housing stock in Glasgow primarily through new construction projects but also includes repurposing non-residential buildings and acquiring private sector properties for housing associations.
While the reduction in funding has impacted the AHSP, the program remains crucial in addressing the housing emergency by increasing affordable housing supply, supporting housing-led regeneration projects, and alleviating housing pressures in the city.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, Convener for Neighbourhood Services and Assets at Glasgow City Council, said: "Through the Affordable Housing Supply Programme, we are building as many houses as budgets allow and we stand ready to build more should additional funding be available."
