North Lanarkshire Council has announced the development of new affordable homes at Mid Forest in Cumbernauld, as part of the South Cumbernauld Community Growth area.
The South Cumbernauld Community Growth Area, which is allocated within the Local Plan for a total of 2,000 new build residential properties, covers two areas known as Mid Forest and Palacerigg.
This first land sale at Mid Forest has the capacity for the delivery of 300 new homes by Bellway, with 75 properties from this phase being purchased by the council ‘off the shelf’ for rent.
Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council and Housing Convener, Councillor Michael McPake, visited the site to find out more about the plans.
Councillor Logue said: "This is just the first phase of exciting plans for new housing on land at Mid Forest. The plans not only address a housing shortfall but provide economic and social benefits, through the development of sustainable communities and include links and extensions to the transport network, access to social and community facilities and opportunities for greener travel.
"The South Cumbernauld Community Growth area is a long-term plan that will bring positive changes to communities, families, children and young people. We’re committed to investing in and delivering for our communities now and for the future."
Councillor McPake added: "These new homes will supplement our ambitious new council house building programme which has seen us deliver 1,470 new homes across North Lanarkshire with a further seven projects underway.
"This is exciting news for the Cumbernauld area with 75 of these homes being allocated for rent. We’re committed to transforming towns and communities across the area providing much needed housing which not only deliver first class homes but bring with them economic and social benefits, which all form part of our vision to make North Lanarkshire the place to live, learn, work, invest and visit."
