Hamilton Town Centre Regeneration Plans Updated

Scotland's Towns Partnership (STP) has welcomed SNP MSP for Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse Constituency, Christina McKelvie, to discuss the updated plans for the regeneration of Hamilton town centre.

STP has been involved in supporting efforts to regenerate local town centres, in particular Hamilton and Larkhall.

STP is also the parent organisation of Scotland's Improvement Districts. The key role of existing Business Improvement Districts, including Hamilton Our Town, in driving footfall into high streets was discussed, as well asthe importance of widespread consultation in local plans and projects.

Christina has been a strong proponent of Town Centre regeneration and the 8 week survey she carried out with Angela Crawley MP led to the adoption of South Lanarkshire's first Hamilton Town Centre Strategy and Action Plan.

Commenting, Christina said: "Hamilton as a town centre has so much to offer that places it in a strong position. The behaviour of shoppers has been changing since the advent of online shopping. Now people often go online for the same products they would have bought from their high street.

"Hamilton however has a wealth of unique businesses that cannot be replicated online. Whether that is the town's food scene, bespoke shops or even the Hang On indoor climbing centre.

"It was great to meet again with the Scotland'sTowns Partnership to discuss the support they can offer in the cross-party efforts to regenerate Hamilton's Town Centre in a way that protects and encourages the growth of our unique businesses."

STP Chief Officer Kimberley Guthrie said:"It was fantastic to spend time with Christina to discuss not only the challenges facing our town centres, but the opportunities which exist to make them stronger, more successful and more sustainable.

"There are high hopes for what can be achieved in South Lanarkshire. The action plan for Hamilton is a prime example of that – and we are keen to offer any advice and insight that we can to help drive collaboration and deliver success for communities across the region."
