Construction To Begin On New Nature Sensitive Holiday Cabins

Construction News Image
Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) and Forest Holidays have reached a lease agreement which will see the start of construction of 50 new nature sensitive holiday cabins in Nevis Forest near Fort William.

The £21 million cabin location is one of the key elements in the 20-year Nevis Forest Masterplan, which aims to create a world class visitor destination that amplifies and builds on Lochaber's reputation as the Outdoor Capital of the UK.

The environmentally friendly cabins will provide year-round accommodation to supplement the existing high-quality visitor offer, and help to increase footfall, dwell time and the economic contribution which the forest makes to the visitor economy.

FLS Chief Executive, Simon Hodgson, said: "Through the process of developing the Nevis Forest Masterplan everyone involved was clear of the huge potential of the area to increase the numbers of visitors that come to enjoy the wide range of top-quality attractions.

"Events like the UCI Cycling World Championship last year illustrated the economic benefits that could be realised by developing this potential and increasing the opportunities for local businesses and accommodation providers.

"There have been some challenges over the last few years but all of the partners are committed to delivering the Masterplan vision."

Progress on the Nevis Forest Masterplan stalled during the COVID19 lockdowns and the ensuing economic and market disruption.

The signing of a 125-year lease from FLS for Forest Holidays cabin location will help to recover the momentum of the overall masterplan, which included a proposed Hotel development, a camping / glamping offer, event parking and improvements in recreation and connectivity.

Andrew Brook, Director of Sustainable Growth, Forest Holidays said: "This month marks a significant milestone in the project and a great step forward in creating a world class visitor destination in Lochaber.

"With over 50 years of experience, we have a long history of creating incredible holiday experiences for all. Nature is central to our business, guiding everything from how we design and build our locations to the long-term positive ecological outcomes of the forests where we are based.

"Our cabins will provide space in nature for people to stay overnight, an opportunity to connect with the natural world and the chance to experience the special character of the local area and landscape.

"We're looking forward to embarking on the next stage of the project and bringing to life our collective vision."

The cabins are designed to fit sensitively within the woodland environment with modest central facilities.

Once completed, the Leanachan Forest destination is anticipated to create over 50 full-time jobs. On average, each Forest Holidays cabin generates £30k in annual visitor spend in the surrounding area.
