Innovative New Approach To Green Skills Workforce In Aberdeen

Aberdeen City Council has announced a new innovative approach to career development as the city continues to build its future energy workforce.

The Council will work with employers in the energy sector to strengthen educational links and help pupils learn about the industry, careers, and the various routes into them.

Energy employers who are interested in schools engagement work and being part of the pipeline are asked to complete this survey.

Councillor Christian Allard, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, said: "The development of our future workforce is crucial to Aberdeen's continuing economic stability and growth. We know that there are considerable opportunities in energy as well as in other sectors, and we want to ensure that our young people are fully equipped and in the best possible position to take advantage of those.

"We are keen to capture data around the present scale and effectiveness of school engagement with energy industry employers and would ask energy employers to complete the survey."

Councillor Ian Yuill, Co-Leader of Aberdeen City Council, said: "Action is needed now to meet the skills shortage and help secure Aberdeen's future as an energy industry leader. The ABZ Skills Pipeline, part of the ABZ Campus, is a key part of ensuring our city has a skilled workforce and that our young people are fully aware of the many opportunities open to them."

Employer-led activities often have limited follow-up or measurable impact on pupils. The ABZ Skills Pipeline will create a programme of linked opportunities with multiple employers to establish a planned and targeted pipeline of activities across the secondary school phase.

This will introduce young people to a range of insider insights into the industry, support their understanding and career aspirations, link to the curriculum, and support education staff.

This work, led by staff from the City Growth and Education services, will be replicated for other key sectors and will support pathway planning by increasing young people's understanding of the sectors, opportunities within them, and the routes in, including qualification and skills needs.

Energy is the initial focus of the ABZ Skills Pipeline, which will expand to include other sectors including health and social care, hospitality, life sciences, technology and digital, creative industries and culture, food and drink, tourism and hospitality, education, and entrepreneurship.

It is anticipated that the knowledge gained, and relationships built via the ABZ Skills Pipeline will have broader benefits which can be extended to the working age population across the city, and particularly to ABZWorks employability participants. The ABZ Skills Pipeline will also support delivery of the Regional Economic Strategy.
