CIOB Announce New Vice President

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has announced the appointment of Tilbury Douglas CEO, Paul Gandy FCIOB, as its latest Vice President.

In 2025, Paul will become the 122nd President of CIOB. His Presidency will follow on from that of Mike Kagioglou FCIOB, who will succeed the current President, Sandi Rhys Jones OBE, FCIOB, in the summer of 2024.

His career which started in 1979 as a trainee engineer with Trollope and Colls Limited has seen him hold positions as director and MD at a number of major construction businesses, latterly Lend Lease, Balfour Beatty, Kier and now Tilbury Douglas. He is currently an elected director of Build UK.

Paul has been a CIOB member since 1987 and became a Fellow in 1999. He has previously served on the board of trustees.

Commenting on his appointment as Vice President of CIOB, Paul said: "The privilege of becoming a vice president of the CIOB is incredibly important to me. I love the construction industry and recognise that it has been extremely good to me over the 40-plus years that I have worked it in. I am excited to have the opportunity to give something back, in particular to help the industry face into the challenge of competency that has been so clearly highlighted by the Building Safety Act. As a professional institute for the construction industry, we can and will, be at the centre of this important issue."

Paul says he also hopes to use his new role as a platform to increase awareness of social value the built environment sector, including thousands of CIOB members, contributes to society.

He added: "The work we do is at the heart of resolving the carbon challenge the country faces, and we provide tremendous opportunities for employment and self-development. We however need to break down barriers to entry and career development that exist and help the profession be recognised for what it is – a rewarding place to work and one where our contribution leaves footprints for generations to come."

Caroline Gumble, Chief Executive of CIOB, said: "I am looking forward to working with Paul and to welcoming him, not just as our new Vice President, but as the 122nd CIOB President, taking on the role in 2025. Paul has a depth of experience which will make him a valuable addition to our team and I know that he will offer leadership and the benefit of his expertise to the CIOB community and the wider sector, at a time of change and challenges for this important industry."

Away from work Paul lives in East Sussex and is a keen motorcyclist with a passion for classic bikes and continental touring. He holds a private pilot's licence, owns a vintage tractor and competes in air rifle target shooting. He also enjoys reading.
