Aberdeen has been awarded a total of new Green Flag Awards by environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful in recognition of its quality open spaces.

The nine flags exceed the seven awarded in 2022, with Westfield Park the recipient of its first flag, and Cove Woodland, managed by the Cove Woodland Trust, another new winner.

Seven others retained their green flag status: Hazlehead Park, Seaton Park, Victoria Park, Johnston Gardens, Slopefield Allotments, Garthdee Field Allotments and Duthie Park.

Aberdeen City Council Co-leader, Councillor Ian Yuill, said: "Aberdonians are proud of the wonderful green spaces we have in our city. Receiving nine Green Flag Awards is national recognition of just how good our city's parks and open spaces are.

"Green spaces bring many benefits to our individuals and communities. They contribute to better air quality, security for the future of wildlife, and improved mental health for residents and visitors alike.

"The awards highlight the effort of City Council staff in maintaining the high standard of these spaces every year and their partnership approach with communities."

Jamie Ormiston, Senior Awards Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said: "Congratulations to all of our winners in Aberdeen City. Every park has a wide range of people visiting them and their requirements can vary. What is essential is that they are well maintained and provide a place for people to relax and have fun.

"Our award-winning parks have demonstrated they are worthy winners, meeting the criteria of the coveted international award. Receiving this prestigious benchmark recognises all the hard work that has gone into maintaining and managing these precious green open spaces."

Keep Scotland Beautiful is an international project which highlights clean, safe, and well-maintained parks and green spaces across the country.
