Next Phase Of Prestonpans Improvement Works Announced

East Lothian Council has announced funding for the next phase of improvement works for Prestonpans' Civic Square and War Memorial.

The next phase of works follows the completion of earlier improvements works in November 2022.

Supported by the Scottish Government's 'Place Based Investment Programme', this phase of work will continue the delivery of the high quality design for the area developed by Rankin Fraser Landscape Architects as part of their 2019 competition winning submission.

The latest works will create an enhanced civic space looking out over the Firth of Forth to complement the improvement works already undertaken to the upper square, whilst also improving pedestrian access along the section of the John Muir Way with the construction of a new ramp and steps.

The works will progress from Monday 15th May with initial site preparation works and run through until November 2023. A diversion of the John Muir Way via the High Street will be signposted for the duration of the works.

Cabinet Member for Community Wellbeing, Cllr Colin McGinn, said: "The improvement works to Civic Square continues the heritage-led regenerative investment in the local area which includes the physical repairs to Preston Tower and Doocot, due for completion in September 2023, construction of the new Engine Shed and planned creation of a volunteer base and regeneration of the former Bath House at Prestongrange, and the development of coordinated heritage interpretation linking various key sites to encourage the local community and visitors from further afield to engage with the area's rich history and heritage."

Prestonpans Community Council was a key stakeholder in the first phase of the development of Civic Square and along with the PSG Area Partnership and Heritage Network, a sub group of the Area Partnership, will continue to ensure the community's voice is a key part of this planning process. The Heritage Network includes members of Heritage groups across PSG such as; 1722 Waggonway, Battlefield Trust, Seton Archaeological Society, Catching the Past, Boatie Blest etc.
